An inquest heard that a 21-year-old British woman was mauled to death by her brother’s dog, which he adopted in the hopes that the dog would help his sister with her mental health issues.
According to The Sun, Keira Ladlow, a kickboxer with an unstable personality problem, was found dead in her brother’s home in Birmingham on Feb. 5 after being attacked by a Staffordshire bull terrier cross.
According to the site, Ladlow’s brother, Kayden Barrett, told the Birmingham Coroners’ Court that when he arrived home from work, he discovered his sister face down in the room with the dog, Gucci, “cowering in the corner.”
“I was terrified and had no idea what to do. I’ve always stood by her side. Even though there was nothing I could have done that day, I feel responsible,” Barrett told the inquest.
Gucci was up for adoption in October after he discovered it was being given away after biting another dog.
The cat had “settled in” nicely and bonded with Barrett and his sister, Barrett told the inquest.
However, Ladlow told her brother the night before her horrible death that she was afraid Gucci might bite her — but he rejected her fears, assuming they were caused by her skipping her medicines, he told the inquest.
“Nobody will ever know what triggered the terrible shift” in events that day, Assistant Coroner Rebecca Ollivere said.
The vicious dog was apprehended and put down.
