Elon Musk was allegedly targeted in a YouTube video by the “hacktivist” group Anonymous for “constantly mocking” cryptocurrency markets.
The film, which was released on Saturday, accuses Tesla CEO Elon Musk of manipulating cryptocurrency markets with his tweets.
“For the past several years, you have enjoyed one of the most favorable reputations of anyone in the billionaire class because you have tapped into the desire that many of us have to live in a world with electric cars and space exploration,” said a person wearing a Guy Fawkes mask and speaking with a digitally modified voice.
“Recently… people are beginning to regard you as another narcissistic rich due who is yearning for attention,” the source continued.
However, as Forbes pointed out, determining whether the video was truly shared by Anonymous is difficult. The most prominent Twitter Anonymous account, YourAnonNews, has previously denied being behind the video, according to the website.
“Again, all the best – but no,” they responded when asked if they could confirm the video was published by them, Forbes reported.
Musk, on the other hand, is unmistakably outspoken when it comes to cryptocurrency. He’s been tweeting about numerous crypto coins over the previous few months. Their prices have risen or fallen in response to his tweets on several occasions.
Musk most recently hinted at a possible separation with bitcoin by tweeting a broken-heart emoji on Twitter, prompting the cryptocurrency to plummet by as much as 8% on Friday.
Tesla had discontinued bitcoin payments three weeks prior due to the detrimental environmental impact of cryptocurrency mining.
His “erratic” public behavior in respect to cryptocurrency, according to the hacking group, “shows an obvious contempt for the typical working person.”
In just 24 hours, the anti-Musk film had over a million views. It concluded with the following: “You may believe you are the wisest person in the room, but you have finally found your match. We are a completely anonymous group! We are numerous. We’ll be there.”
Anonymous is a loosely linked gang of hackers who specialize in data retrieval and network shutdowns.
According to Insider, it regained internet prominence last year after a video criticizing the Minneapolis Police Department went viral.
