Coi Leray has had a difficult few days on social media.
She announced in May that she is “not a female rapper” and solely refers to herself as an artist, but she surprised fans by dropping a few freestyle verses on Thursday.
This week, Hip Hop received the freestyle and cypher performances from the 2021 XXL Freshman class, and Leray received some severe criticism from the public.
In response to her critics, she said on Tuesday, “You believed I was about to spit the hottest fire inferno.”
“Let me tell you something…I personally believe I had the best XXL freestyle. Lakeyah and I had by far the best XXL freestyle. My entire cypher class, in particular. I haven’t even heard the cyphers yet, let alone the other cyphers. And I’m pretty sure we had the best cypher. Particularly me.”
Leray doubled down on her assured performance, and now she’s back, this time reciting a few lines she’d recently written.
“Since we’re all writing freestyles, I wrote this one…. I operate best under duress [sleep emoji] and am only venting [wink emoji].”
Leray’s delivery in the uploaded video is a far cry from her XXL freestyle and cypher, as she abandons her high-pitched, baby-voiced sound in favour of a fresh approach.
The feedback has been divided, but give it a listen and let us know what you think of Leray’s latest freestyle.
