A video has gone viral of French President Emmanuel Macron being slapped in the face by a man while on a walkabout in southern France.
Macron, clothed in shirt sleeves, can be seen walking towards a crowd of onlookers who were behind a fence in a video posted to Twitter.
As he reached out to shake the hand of one man wearing a mask, the man slapped him across the face.
Two individuals were arrested as a result of the altercation, and Mr. Macron issued a statement of defiance.
“We must not let ultraviolent people take over the public debate, they do not deserve it,” the statement read.
According to the Telegraph, the man could be heard saying in French, “Down with Macronia,” before slapping Macron in the face.
Security for the president swiftly intervened, dragging the man to the ground and moving Macron away from him.
Immediately following the incident, well-wishers could be heard screaming, while others burst out laughing.
The event occurred as Macron was visiting the Drome region of south-eastern France, where he met with restaurateurs and students to discuss how life will resume normalcy following the pandemic.
According to BFM TV and RMC radio, two people were arrested in connection with the event.
Far-left leader Jean-Luc Mélenchon and Prime Minister Jean Castex, among others, have expressed their support for the president.
