A convicted Spanish cannibal was sentenced to 15 years in prison for killing his mother, eating chunks of her corpse, and feeding some of her to his dog.
After a court disregarded his claims that he was undergoing a psychotic episode during the grisly slaying, Alberto Sanchez Gomez, 28, will serve an additional five months for desecrating his 68-year-old mother’s body, according to the BBC.
According to reports, the unemployed waiter, dubbed the “Cannibal of Las Ventas,” said in court in April that he heard voices urging him to kill Maria Soledad Gomez when they were watching TV in their apartment in 2019.
In May, the Independent reported that a jury in Madrid found him guilty of killing his mother after an altercation.
Prosecutors claim Gomez sliced his mother’s body into 1000 pieces with a carpenter’s saw and two kitchen knives, some of which were discovered in Tupperware containers inside their home.
According to the Sun, Gomez gave various parts of his mother’s body to his dog over the period of two weeks.
“Yes, my mother is in here, dead,” Gomez told investigators looking into a missing person complaint.
“Me and the dog have been slowly but steadily devouring her.”
According to the Independent, Gomez ate some of his mother’s body parts uncooked while boiling others.
The judge rejected Gomez’s attorneys’ arguments that he was “psychologically disturbed” at the time of the murder.
According to CNN, Maria Gomez had been gone for approximately a month when her son was arrested.
Gomez was dubbed the “cannibal of Las Ventas” by local media, referring to the Madrid neighbourhood where he and his mother lived near the famous bullring.
Gomez is believed to have said in court that he was “extremely remorseful” for strangling and eating bits of his mother’s body.
According to the Independent, Gomez remarked, “I endure anxiety from the moment I wake up. When I think of my mother, I am heartbroken.”
