According to local officials and official media, a massive gas explosion in a residential neighborhood in central China has trapped and injured “many” people.
According to state news agency Xinhua, a gas line exploded in the Zhangwan area of Shiyan city, Hubei province, at at 6:30 a.m. local time Sunday.
Rescue workers in orange jumpsuits were seen searching through the ruins of crushed houses in images circulating on social media that looked to be from the area.
The number of individuals trapped or if anyone was killed was not disclosed by authorities.
According to the local authorities, the cause of the tragedy is being investigated, and rescue attempts are being organized on the Chinese microblogging site Weibo.
