Selena Gomez is widely recognized as one of the most beautiful women on the planet, but she says that her fluctuating weight a natural part of life for all women has left her feeling anxious about her appearance over the years.
That is especially true while attending one of the year’s most prestigious fashion events.
The actress and singer has spoken up about attending the Met Gala in 2015 when she wasn’t feeling especially “happy” about her appearance.
On Vogue’s ‘Life In Looks’ series, the 28-year-old actress reflected on some of her most memorable red carpet experiences, explaining how she felt at the time and how she feels now.
She admitted that despite looking picture-perfect on the red carpet six years ago in the gorgeous white Vera Wang gown she wore for the event’s ‘China: Through the Looking Glass’ theme, she wasn’t feeling her best.
“My weight fluctuates a lot,” she admitted. “I recall feeling bad about my body on this particular night.”
“What was truly incredible was that I was able to work on a dress that matched my figure,” she adds.
“I had a wonderful time shaping this gown. I believe we came together and created something truly lovely and one-of-a-kind for me.”
“That was one of the instances where I was like, I don’t have to have that 19-year-old body shape because I’m not,” Gomez continued, reflecting on how she felt at 22.
Looking back at another outfit, Gomez remembered her stunning red Prada gown from the 2016 American Music Awards.
“This is probably my favorite dress I’ve ever worn because it gave me a vacation from some of the madness I live in,” the “Rare” singer explained.
“I was stepping to, literally, fresh off of taking care of myself and knowing that this was the first-time people were going to see me.”
“Once I got the dress on, I was like, ‘I’m ready to be me,'” she explained. I’m ready to face the world and restore my identity.'”
It’s also not the first time Gomez has reassured followers that she, too, struggles with weight fluctuations, speaking out about how her lupus diagnosis took years to come to terms with.
“It was the first time I experienced that with my weight fluctuation,” she stated in a Giving Back Generation interview in 2018.
“I have lupus and have renal issues and high blood pressure, so I have a lot of health difficulties, and that’s when I started noticing more of the body image problems,” she says.
Gomez stated that her weight changes were caused by “a mixture” of causes, including the medications she would take for the rest of her life after a kidney transplant in 2017.
“That’s just my truth,” she explained, “I fluctuate.”
