In an apparent murder-suicide, seven people were shot dead at a birthday party in Colorado early Sunday, including the alleged gunman.
According to Colorado Springs police, gunfire erupted shortly after midnight when the boyfriend of one of the women at the party burst in and began shooting before killing himself.
Officers responding to the gathering at the Canterbury Mobile Park Home discovered six dead adults and a seventh victim who was rushed to a nearby hospital and later pronounced dead, according to investigators.
According to police, there were children at the wedding, but none were hurt in the bloodbath.
According to police, the victims and the alleged shooter have not been named because their families have not been notified.
In a statement, Colorado Springs Police Chief Vince Niski said, “Words fall short to explain the tragedy that occurred this morning.”
“As a husband, a father, a grandfather, and a member of this community, my heart breaks for the families who have lost someone they love, and for the children who have lost their parents,” the chief said.
As authorities investigate the incident, Colorado Springs Mayor John Suthers urged patience.
“We ask for the public’s patience and the sensitivity of our media partners as the CSPD conducts a comprehensive investigation to provide information to the families and friends affected by this tragedy,” he said in a statement.
Colorado Gov. Jared Polis described the shootings as “devastating,” particularly because they occurred on Mother’s Day.
“The tragic shooting in Colorado Springs is particularly heartbreaking because many of us are spending the day honoring the women in our lives who have shaped who we are today,” Polis wrote.
He said, “Families ripped apart, and at a birthday party no less.” “My heartfelt condolences and prayers go out to the victims, their relatives, and all those who have been affected by this tragedy.”
"Words fall short to describe the tragedy that took place this morning."
