After being shot in the head during a carjacking in Chicago, an Uber driver has died two days later.
According to Fox 32, Indiana native Joe Schelstraete, 38, was working in Cicero, Illinois Monday evening when he was hailed by four armed men using the Uber app.
The four suspects approach his four-door Ford sedan, wearing hoods over their heads, according to security footage obtained by the local broadcaster.
One of them slipped into the rear seat and shot the father of three in the head.
The hoodlum shot Schelstraete even after he handed over his money and phone. Schelstraete was declared brain dead and died the next morning.
“The victim has never been convicted of a crime.” According to the Fox affiliate.
Cicero Police Chief Jerry Chlada stated, “He’s an industrious young man who was out trying to make a dollar.”
According to reports, one juvenile suspect has been apprehended. Chlada told reporters, “At this time, we’re pursuing several additional suspects of interest.”
Uber drivers have expressed their fear to the station.
Kevin Ferrari remarked, “When I put someone in the back of my car, I hope they don’t have a gun.”
“There needs to be a background check since they use fake names,” he reportedly stated, urging Uber to improve the app’s security to prevent future attacks.
Uber said it was “saddened” to learn of Mr. Schelstraete’s death by a “senseless act of violence.”
In a statement, the company said, “Our thoughts are with his family, and we are collaborating with law enforcement on their investigation.”
